Component 1: Purpose and Focus

Use a few of the five Ws to create some questions you might ask of yourself to develop purpose and focus.

  1. I'm hoping you mean the standard 5 Ws..who, what, when, where, why...

I'll use those for questions that the Opening Minds book might suggest we ask students as part of dialogic teaching:
    What do you know already?
What are you confused about? What don't you know yet?
What additional information do you need in order to figure that out?
Who do you think you could ask for help with that?
What did you do to figure that out?
When/where (in what context) might that be true/not true?
What might be/could be one way to solve this problem?
Why might someone have come up with this answer?
Why might the character have done that?
What do you suppose the character might have been thinking?

  2. What new understandings do I want my students to have following this lesson?

What questions will I guide my students with?

How am I going to accomplish this lesson (strategies, engagement, etc.)?

How will I know what my students have learned (or haven't learned) following this lesson?

Why am I doing this lesson?

  3. What do I want the outcome to be?
How will I know what the student has taken away from the lesson?

Who might need to learn in a different way?

How will I know they have mastered the skill?
How will I assess their learning?
What questions am I going to ask during the lesson?
Why do they need to know this?
Where should I stand in my class to get the most participation?
Who should I call on to show their understanding?
