Write a summary of this chaper like you see in some books at the end of each chapter.

  1. There are many effective journaling and note taking tools to aid in deeper mathematical thinking for determining importance, summarizing, and synthesizing. Students must be taught to "sift and sort", locate information, and avoid "input overload" to determine importance. When students summarize, they identify key elements that solidify meaning. Synthesizing information allows for a deeper understanding and formation of new schema. Habit 7 is a powerful real world tool.

  4. Journaling and note-taking are two valuable practices in the mathematical classroom. These practices allow students to develop a deeper understanding of their learning through analyzing, summarizing, and synthesizing information. Students must learn to sort through learned information and determine importance. They must also learn to identify key ideas or concepts to incorporate into their summaries.

  5. The dialogic classroom is effective in supporting moral development and civic engagement. Students learn to be "on the lookout" for injustice. They learn to raise questions and to really listen to other perspectives. They develop social reasoning and learn the importance of social action. In the dialogic classroom, teachers help students to "make the decision to be kind and courageous people."

  6. The skill of being able to determine importance is one that students will use throughout their life. Sorting data into essential and nonessential will assist in their learning by catergorizing text, numbers, conversations, etc. Students must learn to sort data in order to identify key ideas and concepts. Students can learn this skill through note-taking and journaling; by making the information relevant to them and their learning.

  7. It is important that students are given ample opportunities to summarize and synthesize their mathematical understanding and learning. In order to do this, students must be taught the tools to effectively sort through the essential and nonessential information. This allows students to take ownership of their learning and make meaning of what is learned through effective note-taking and journaling.

  9. In order for students to make sense of math they need to write about their learning. It is important that they learn to be able to summarize and determine essential from nonessential information. Writing helps them make connections to their learning in a way which empowers them to learn more deeply about math concepts.
