Component 3: Bridge of the Learning

I created a concept circle like the one on page 145 using the iPad app Idea Sketch. Look at the terms in each of the sections. Think about your understanding of the terms in relation to this chapter. Write a few sentences discussing the connection between the words and write how they fit together.

  1. Not sure how it works in your book, but in dialogic teaching teachers scaffold learning for students by asking appropriate questions and teaching students to ask questions (inqiry). By asking questions, students and teachers manipulate (experiment with) ideas and formulate possible answers.

  2. “Scaffolding” is structuring levels of support to meet the needs of a variety of learners. “Formulating” is expressing or explaining a concept, question, or answer in a linear or systematic way. These two words relate to one another in that they are using systematic levels to achieve something (expression or learning support). “Manipulate” is to rearrange objects, numbers, or other concepts to better understand something. We would use manipulation to help scaffold learning. “Inquiry” is the search for an answer or understanding. The overall chapter theme of “Bridge to the Learning” gives the mental imagery of a supported path leading towards the goal of learning. The “inquiry” would be the learning journey, and the “scaffolding”, “formulating”, and “manipulating” would be the bridge.

  3. Scaffold supports the construction of meaning and to Formulate is to analyze. An inquiry is the process that has the aim of solving a problem. Manipulate is to move or arrange in a skillful manner. One must formulate to answer the inquiry, and manipulate to scaffold the learning. A bridge connects a route, so all four words connect together as a route for learning.

  4. The bridge is taking the students from where they are to where they need to be...
Inquiry is the introduction of the topic or idea. Teachers and students formulate questions to determine the level of understanding of this idea or topic. Teachers scaffold the learning to meet everyone's need and use manipulatives to engage and reinforce the learning at all levels.
These four components build the bridge.

  5. I am the bridge to connect what they already know to what they need to know. My bridge should have all components to make an effective path of learning.I need to guide the inquiry, manipulate the lesson appropriately, scaffold when and where needed to formulate learning.

  6. Let's go! It's time to cross the bridge! We are going from this side of the river where we are and head on over to where we need to be. The bridge is built with scaffolding because we build up and support student learning. I am your inquiry guide so that we can move across the bridge and learn.
